Aquatint, hard ground etching on BFK Rives 250gsm paper.
Image size: 8" x 10", Paper size: 11" x 14".
Limited edition of 11, 2021. Signed and numbered in pencil.
This print is inspired by Patrick McDonnell's book "The Gift of Nothing." What do you give someone who already has everything? The surprising answer was nothing, at least nothing tangible. So this print was intentionally meant to be vague - an empty gift box. What was the gift? What will be the gift? Was this the giver? Or the receiver? What's the story?? I guess only the viewer will know. =)
The Gift #21 was made using the labor intensive techniques of hard ground etching and aquatint. The copper plate was first beveled and degreased. Then a hard ground was applied and the lines were drawn and etching onto the copper. Next a thin, even layer of rosin was applied to the plate and etched in successive time periods with different areas stopped out to attain the desired gradation of shades in the print. Finally, the plate was inked up, wiped clean of excess ink, and run through a hand-cranked press to create the final print.
Print only, frame not included.
