Collaged Mini Photozine

Flip through of photo zine, T/e/s/t/i/n/g/.. .

I took a bookmaking class over the summer and one of initial projects was to create a zine from a folded sheet of paper. I enjoyed it much more than I though I would and below is the result!

Being a darkroom photographer I have many scraps of "test strip” that we use to determine the best exposure time for a print. The tell-tale sign that a print is a test is the bands of gradation from light to dark. As with anything, much time and effort goes in to this testing phase before the final image emerges. This zine is a nod and an ode to the process of creating handmade darkroom prints, which - as any darkroom artist knows - ALWAYS starts with test prints… many, many test prints.

I figured with so many test prints, I might as well repurpose it for something else. So this zine was created from a selection of collaged test prints and typewritten words.

I’m hoping this will be one of many in a series which I’ve decided to call “In Praise of Labors” (a nod and a wink to William Kentridge’s “In Praise of Shadows,” which is in turn another nod and wink to Junichiro Tanizaki’s “In Praise of Shadows”).

Two versions were made a B&W version and a toned B&W version, both are available in the shop here! :)

Cutting and folding the zine.

This is initial piece of paper that will be folded into a zine.

Copies of two versions made - a B&W version & a toned B&W version.
